Material Collection Guidelines

Marin County has a Zero Waste goal to divert 94% of all materials from the landfill. Creating less waste and recycling more materials are keys to the success of this goal. Recycling and garbage pickup service is available up to 6 times a week depending on your need. We can work with you to set up a schedule that best fits your needs.

Garbage Collection Guidelines

Marin County has a Zero Waste goal to divert 94% of all materials from the landfill. Creating less waste and recycling more materials are keys to the success of this goal.

The Commercial Gray Cart or garbage dumpster is for the curbside collection of non-recyclable and non-compostable items. All items placed in these containers will go directly to the landfill.

Dual Sort Recycling Collection Guidelines

State-of-the-art, user-friendly carts and specialized trucks reduce recycling contamination and increase recycling rates. The carts separate glass, cans, and plastics from paper in order to prevent clean, dry paper from becoming soiled by residues left on other recyclables. Before this system was adopted, more than 30 percent of the refuse still sent to the landfill was contaminated paper. Paper recycling also results in increased carbon sequestration by forests since fewer trees need to be harvested for wood and paper products.

Commercial customers are offered two carts for collection of these materials.  The Commercial Blue Cart is for all paper recyclables and the Commercial Brown Cart  is for other mixed recycling including plastic bottles and containers #1-7 in the triangle arrows; glass bottles and jars; aluminum foil and food trays; and aluminum and mixed metal food cans.
