Marin Recycling Center operates a household hazardous waste facility as a joint program with the City of San Rafael and the Marin County Waste Management Joint Powers Authority. Residents of Marin County, with the exception of Novato, may bring paint, adhesives, motor oil, pesticides, household batteries, latex paint, computer monitors, televisions, and bleach cleaners to the facility free of charge.

Businesses may dispose of small quantities of hazardous waste by appointment and for a fee. Please call the facility for a list of approved materials and to make arrangements.

Don't Throw Out Your Paints, Oils and Batteries!
Marin Sanitary Accepts Most Hazardous Materials:

We accept latex and oil based paints, stains, shellacs, solvents, thinners, additives, adhesives, waxes, fuels, propane, motor oil and oil filters, anti-freeze, batteries, garden sprays, gopher bait, rat poisons, ant traps, fertilizers, spray cans, pool chemicals, photo chemicals, lead, mercury, bleach, household cleaners, flourescent bulbs, TV's and computer monitors. We also accept asbestos with special handling. For instructions on asbestos handling, please call 485 5648.

Materials must be packaged in sturdy, non-leaking containers no larger than 5 gallons or 50 pounds in size. Do not mix different wastes together.

State law limits the total amount transported at one time to 15 gallons or 125 pounds. The exception is latex paint and motor oil, which can be a total of 20 gallons combined.

A resident of the household that generated the waste must accompany the waste material that is dropped off. Proof of the residency is required in the form of a drivers' license, tax bill, or utility bill that shows the street address.
